SCANNER

A scanner is an input device that captures documents such as photographs and text. There are many types of scanners according to their design, scanning mechanism etc. When scanning a document, a document is first converted into a digital signal, and then scanning is done on this electronic version of the document.

A scanner can be connected to a computer using various interfaces such as SCSI, TWAIN, etc., but today the most common method is USB cable. Some of the major manufacturers of scanners include Epson, Hewlett-Packard, Microtek, and Relisys.

When was the first scanner built?

Early forms of scanners appeared in the 1860s. However, the scanner as we know it was made in 1957 by a person named Russell Kirsch at the United States Bureau of National Standards. The first image scanned by this device was a photo of Kirsch's son. This black and white image measured only 5 × 5 cm and had a resolution of 176 pixels on each side.

(TYPES OF SCANNER)

FLATBED SCANNER

Flatbed scanners are desktop scanners. Flatbed scanners have a large glass surface and a lid. These scanners work best with flat objects such as photos and paper, but you can also place large objects such as open books on the scanner bed. Some models of flatbed scanners are manufactured in all-in-one devices, which act as printers, scanners, copy machines, and fax machines.

Flatbed scanners are the most commonly used scanners. They are used both at home and at the office. This scanner looks like a photocopier. Flatbed scanners can scan any document with a click of a button.

SHEET-FED SCANNER

Sheetfed scanners scan loose papers placed in trays by pulling them into a static scanning lens. These devices make it easier to scan a larger stack of paper than a flatbed scanner, where you will have to insert and remove each page. However, due to their design, they will not work to scan books or large letters that do not fit in trays. Some sheetfed scanners have additional trays for designing small objects such as business cards.

DRUM SCANNER

Drum scanners are used to scan a document and print at a much higher resolution rate. This can give you a range of resolution, detail, sharpness, dynamic range, and color rendering. Only a few companies make these scanners due to their high cost.

The drum scanner uses a photo-multiplier (PM) tube, which is a light sensing device. Therefore it provides a high sensitivity and good signal-to-noise ratio.

PRODUCTION SCANNER

Production scanners work similar to flatbed scanners, but are faster. These machines also have a feed device to quickly scan many documents. Unlike regular flatbed scanners, often priced at the consumer level, production scanners sell for thousands of dollars and are targeted to publishing companies and other businesses that need to scan multiple documents daily. is.

HANDHELD SCANNER

Hand scanners or handheld scanners are small stick-shaped devices. Use a hand scanner to gently drag over the entire surface area of the document you want to scan. Unlike flatbed scanners, hand scanners allow you to scan objects of any size. However, it has a lower quality than flatbed.
