WHAT ARE DIGITAL LIBRARIES?

A digital library is a library in which data is stored in digital formats (as opposed to print, microform, or other media) and can be accessed by a computer. Content can be stored locally, or accessed remotely. The term was first popularized in 1994 by the NSF / DARPA / NASA Digital Library Initiative.

You will know that our country is becoming a digital India very fast, the government is bringing new apps, schemes, facilities for the people every day so that people can reduce problems and also save time. Like- Digital Locker, Digital Payment, Digital Signature, etc. Now the government has brought before us another new service called Digital Library.

Soft Copy of documents in a digital library is saved in PDF format on a CD. Through this, magazines, articles, books, papers, images, sound files, and videos can be easily viewed on the Internet. There is no need to call an expert for this, you can easily access it yourself. Prints of these PDF files can also be taken. Digital library is also known as the electronic library, virtual library, hybrid library

A digital library, unlike other forms of media such as print or microforms, is a specialized form of a library that incorporates a collection of digital assets. Such digital objects can be in the form of visual material, text, audio, or video electronic media as it is a library, it also has the features to organize, store and retrieve media or files that make up the archive. When stored remotely, content in a digital library can be accessed locally through a store or network.

A digital library is a collection of digital resources that exist only in digital form, or are converted to digital in another form. These resources are typically stored in a wide range of formats and can be accessed by users on a computer network. Such a library can be updated daily and can be quickly accessed by users.

WHAT ARE DIGITAL LIBRARIES? BRIEF EXPLANATION TO DIGITAL LIBRARIES

Advantages of Digital Library

The digital library is not limited to a particular location. Users can access their information from anywhere on their computer screen using the Internet.

  • The user of a digital library does not need to physically visit the library, people from all over the world can access the digital information through an internet connection.
  • The digital library can be accessed anytime 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.
  • The same resource can be used by multiple users at the same time.
  • The digital library provides access to very rich content in a more structured way i.e.
  • we can access a particular book from the catalog and then to a particular chapter.
  • The user can use any search term for the word or phrase of the entire collection.
  • An exact copy of the original can be made at any time without any deterioration in quality.
  • Traditional libraries are limited by storage space. Digital libraries have the ability to store a lot of information because digital information requires very little physical space to hold them.
  • A special digital library can provide a link to any other resource of other digital libraries very easily.
  • The cost of maintaining a digital library is much lower than that of a traditional library. A traditional library has to spend large sums of money to pay for staff, book maintenance, rent, and additional books. Digital libraries overcome these fees.

Disadvantages of Digital Library

Copyright: Digitization violates the copyright law because the idea content of one author can be freely transferred by another without his approval. Digital media is therefore a difficult way to distribute information.

Access speed: As more and more computers are connected to the Internet, its access speed is decreasing. If the new technology will not be developed to solve the problem, the Internet will be full of error messages shortly.

The initial cost is high: the cost of the infrastructure of the digital library ie the cost of hardware, software; The leased communication circuit is generally very high.

Band Width: The digital library will require a higher band for the transfer of multimedia resources, but the bandwidth is decreasing day by day due to its high usage.

Efficiency: With a much larger volume of digital information, it becomes difficult to find the right content for a specific task.

Environment: Digital libraries cannot reproduce the environment of a traditional library. Many people also find reading printed material easier to read than reading material on a computer screen.
